0

One of the highlights of the 2016 London festival calendar, Sunfall looks set for another scintillating year after making its first line-up announcement yesterday.

The festival, which will take place in London’s Brockwell Park on Saturday the 12th of August, is organised by the same team behind the The Columbo Group, an events company that manages the premier London nightclubs Phonox, XOYO, The Nest and Jazz Cafe. “We’re proud that the work we did to create great sound in a central London festival paid off,” Andy Peyton of The Columbo Group says of last year’s Sunfall event. “We are committed to surpass those levels again.”

This year’s edition features house, techno and disco acts from the UK and abroad, including big names Helena Hauff, Derrick May, The Black Madonna, Theo Parrish, Motor City Drum Ensemble, Antal, Palms Trax, Move D, Beautiful Swimmers and Jackmaster. Additionally, live sets are promised from Roy Ayers, Floating Points, Larry Heard and Romare.

Âme, Dixon To Headline Barcelona Innervisions Party

0

Always a highlight of the gig season in Barcelona, 2017’s Innervisions Party will feature a stellar line-up of artists, including Âme, Dixon, John Talabot, Todd Terje, Job Jobse and Schwarzmann.

The 10-hour session (4pm-2am) will take place on June 18th at Plaza Mayor De El Poble Espanyol, and organisers say they have elected to hold the event on a Sunday in order to “change the plaza’s setting and create a more intimate dancefloor-driven feeling.”

Check out some footage of Âme burning it down at Innervisions 2015:

LA artist Ryder to release new single “Nirvana”

0

Los Angeles-based indie-pop artist Ryder is set to release her new single ‘Nirvana’ on the 17th February via her own imprint Ryder Records. Racking up over 10 million plays on Youtube already, Ryder has also made incredible impressions on Spotify, with her anthemic second single “Ruins” charting at #10 on the Spotify’s US Viral Charts and #30 on the Spotify Global Chart. No stranger to Hype Machine’s Top Ten, all of Ryder’s singles have risen to the top of the chart (the most recent “Ruins” BKAYE & Ben Maxwell Remix resting at the #2 spot). Summing up over 5 million streams on listening platforms, with ‘Pretty Little Gangster’ reaching over 1.1 million plays on Spotify, Ryder has also received previous support from major YouTube channels Mr Suicide Sheep and Mr Revillz. Deep Chills‘ remix of “Fade Away” has surpassed 1 million plays on Soundcloud, and the BKAYE & Ben Maxwell Remix of “Ruins” is fast approaching the same figure. ‘Nirvana’ will be premiered by BILLBOARD alongside a Billboard live session on the 26th of January 2017.

The high-pitched opening vocals of Nirvana set the stage for a slow, grooving and richly nuanced future pop track. Ryder’s obviously organic vocal talent is explored deeply, and progressively thick reverb creates a swirling, misty atmosphere for the persuasively well chosen selection of synth sounds. Simple, unobtrusive melody sits at the right balance of catchiness and originality, and the metaphorical subject matter of the lyrics reflect the workings of a soul exploring the deeper meaning of the music.

On Nirvana, Ryder says, “The release is exciting for me because it feels like a door opening to more new things you will hear from me. I’ve grown a lot in the last year as an artist and creator; I can’t wait to share that. I grew up around classical music and used to perform in choirs as a young kid, where I’d sing classical choral arrangements and folk music as well as a brief stint in opera. The hauntingly beautiful melodies and harmonic layers from those genres are inspiring motifs I try to constantly incorporate in my music wherever I can. ‘Nirvana’ to me is a blend of classical melodic moments with contemporary pop music.”

Crowds Walk Out Of FlyLo’s Surreal Film Debut

0

Leftfield electronica superstar Flying Lotus’ first attempt at a feature film has been deemed unwatchable. Some are calling it grotesque, others uncomfortable. But it seems certain to go down as one of the least palatable films ever.

Kuso allegedly caused walkouts en masse at Sundance Film Festival in Utah this week.

Previously, a snippet of the movie was premiered at the Sundance offshoot event NEXT FEST in Los Angeles in August. The venue saw fit to hand out barf bags before the screening.

However, a positive review from The Verge called it “the grossest film ever,” going on to describe scenes of “copious gore” and “vomit-inducing pseudo goofs.”

Dekmantel Festival Releases Teaser Video, Announces First Acts

0

The organisers of Dutch electronic music festival Dekmantel have released a cryptic promotional video on their Facebook page, that seems to hint at some of the acts that will be playing at this year’s event (to be held at  Amsterdamse Bos from 2-6 August).

The video, cleverly titled “Tomorrow’s Artefacts” and which has been shared widely on social media, presents a series of rendered 3D images spanning ancient and future worlds, that are occasionally ‘interrupted’ by glimpses of their ‘underlying code’.

A fun promotional stunt, eagle-eyed electronic music fans have so far been able ‘confirm’ the following acts for the 2017 Dekmantel Music Festival: Floating Points, Helena Hauff, Motor City Drum Ensemble, DJ Nobu, Joy Orbison, Bicep, Palms Trax, Doppler Effekt, Larry Heard, Vakula, Robert Hood, Boiler Room, Red Light Radio and Funktion-One.

Electronic Music Festivals Banned After BPM Shootings

0
The tragic shootings at the 2017 BPM Festival closing party in Playa del Carmen – which saw 5 people lose their lives – have prompted the mayor of the Mexican resort town, Torres Gomez, to declare: “”We want these types of events to go. We won’t allow one more.”

Speculation is rife about the involvement of cartels in the attack, which took place at the Blue Parrot nightclub at about 3am on the 16th of January. Unconfirmed reports state that one of the area’s drug cartels has claimed responsibility for the shootings, even displaying a banner that directly addresses Phillip Pulitano, the festival’s co-founder.

Praying for everyone down at #BPM right now. Music should unite us, this should never happen. #RIP to all the victims of this shooting 💔😭

Fans around the EDM world have reacted with shock and sadness to the news, and a flurry of debates surrounding festival culture have sprung up on message boards and social media platforms.

Delo vs Yak release “Coaction” Split EP

0

Delo vs Yak has announced the release of their newest collaboration, “Coaction”. The 4-track split EP is a product of tracks individually created by the two artists and released in a shared collection.

In the span of a single year, John De Lord (PKA Delo) has seen support from the likes of Dusk & Blackdown, Addison Groove and the Swamp81 fam, and opened for the likes of Dillinja and Zinc. Synchronously, John Randall (PKA Yak)’s tunes have graced the sets of Dusk & Blackdown and Loefah as well, plus those of Hodge, Paleman, Plastician, Lamont and Troy Gunner (to name a few), and he’s shared the booth with the likes of Call Super, Walton, Alex Coulton, Palms Trax, Ejeca and Dark Sky. This well-earned good will surrounding the two Johns at the moment is enheartening; the fitting buzz almost palpable – both indicative of the continued health and recursive growth of the wellspring that is “the UK sound”.

Delo’s “S-Wer” is a skeletal, syncopated 909 workout punctuated by namesake onomatopoeic vocal cuts, sporadic sub pulses and bubbly percussive trills. Never before (outside the realm of yesteryear minimal techno) has a track done more with less.

Moving on, Yak’s “Anju” is a steppy ting, starting off as a stripped-back soulful garage number, before shifting gears into a bassline-driven belter riddim. As said bassline strobes and slithers along, Yak gradually brings back the funk and soul, expertly balancing heft and poise with almost jazz-inflected flair. One of those rare day & night tracks – equally effective in the club, at home, and on the way to and from.

Delo retakes the lead with “Hades”, a serpentine, cone-tearing blend of Shackleton-esque, halcyon-days dubstep and contemporaneous club rigueur. This murky, plutonic invocation moves forward with a gait that’s as graceful as it is ponderous – nigh-hypnotic in its Afrofuturist vocal juju.

Yak rounds out the split with “Magg” – a drum tool so clap-happy it almost seems like it’s applauding itself in real time as it rolls along… and the applause is well- deserved, as its baroque percussive anatomy is reminiscent of a batucada, in its festive ebullience.

“Coaction” Tracklist
01. Delo – S-Wer
02. Yak – Anju
03. Delo – Hades
04. Yak – Magg

EDM-themed tea house to open in San Francisco

0

A tea house with an EDM theme is set to open soon in San Francisco. Gosu will feature both bubble tea and big beats, and yes, it will be open for breakfast.

Owner Joey Tran told Eater:

“It’s not about drugs or anything like that. You know how you go into a bar and see people fighting sometimes because they’re drunk,” he said. “But you don’t see that at a rave because we believe in the concept of PLUR. That’s why I incorporated that.”

The name of the game is PLUR – peace, love, unity, respect. Gosu will also serve Asian snacks and desserts.

EDM will remain a constant at Gosu. However, due to the fact that “millennials are so very finicky”, says Tran, the trends will dictate the food served.

Earlier in the year, “rave food truck” business EDMunchies disastrously failed to meet their Kickstarter target in the Boston area.
