Incunabula and Amber are considered as being a more melodic take on IDM and ambient music, before the duo began to reject those more familiar sounds on Tri Repetae, pursuing a darker, more experimental route.

Pixelord share tracklist of his upcoming LP to land in September

0

“Human.exe” is the new LP taken from cyber-futurism experimental electronic artist Alexey Devyanin aka Pixelord slated for release on the 9th September whilst the first single will be dropped on the 5th August via Hyperboloid Records. Pixelord has played at Berghain, Talinn Music Week, Electric Castle alongside The Prodigy, State-X New Forms with James Blake and Dark Star and toured the US and China extensively.
Described by Resident Advisor as chameleonic, due to his diverse range and ability to conjure such unique sounds and characteristics, Moscow’s Pixelord takes things even further with latest LP “Human.exe” delivering soundscapes of a dystopian future echoing otherworldly sounds tailor-made for Chris Cunningham and science fiction cult classic “Blade Runner”. Drawing influence from the likes of Aphex Twin, Mark Pritchard, Clark and LORN, the LP is tough and touching in the same breath using his cyborg ‘Human.exe’ to express his emotions, creating robust rhythms merging elements of bass, IDM and future beats.

Alexey explains: “‘Human.exe’ is about a robot who wants to be a human but still he is a program, exe file. The video will be about this particular robot too. My music was always retro futuristic and nostalgic about old computers and systems, this time as well .exe is the reference to my childhood, Idm music, DOS programs and cyber romanticism.”.
Human.exe’s Tracklist:
Gear Soul
Operator
Chrome Tears
Machina
Robo
Telepathic
Metal Mutant
Fix Me

EXCLUSIVE: We caught up with NIBC

0
We caught up with Berlin-based, Gothenburg-born Fredrik Nyberg aka NIBC who has long been a key player on Sweden’s music scene. The last years have witnessed NIBC going from strength to strength as a producer, DJ, collaborator, remixer, promoter, and label head of Trunkfunk Records.

His recent smash house hit with “You Let Me Go”, was snapped up by Ministry of Sound and saw support by Youtube channels Eton Messy and Selected.

Hi there, how are you and what are you up to today?
All good, thanks. Currently sweating out new music in my studio during a heatwave in Berlin.

To those not familiar with you, how would you describe your sound?
Usually melodic influences and driving rhythms with roots in 90s sounding house & techno.

What are the 5 albums that have influenced you the most?
Daft Punk – Homework
Ian Pooley – Meridian
Pharcyde – Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde
N.W.A. – Straight Outta Compton
The Prodigy – Experience

Which other artists are you into at the moment and why?
Kaytranada – I’ve always been a fan of his productions, beats and chord progressions. The 99.9% Album is amazing!
Man Power – love the new EPs on Correspondant and ESP.
Avalon Emerson – her last EP on Whities is sooo good.
Midland – such an amazing producer and DJ. Really love his Graded and Re-graded releases.

Are there any key pieces of equipment that you are using to define your sound?
I mainly make everything inside the box nowadays. I use my SH-101 and Juno 106 sometimes and for beats I really like Native Instruments Maschine & Battery.

What would you say some of the challenges artists face today in the music industry?
All the saturation makes you have to work a lot harder to cut through the noise. Also it’s a lot more about marketing and building your profile. When I started getting into house & techno I had no idea what most of my heroes looked like.

Where do you gather songwriting inspiration?
I do a lot of digging for music in my own collection and in record stores. I also get a lot of inspiration from travelling both in Berlin and around Sweden.

Take us through your songwriting process. Are there any particular steps you take when put music together?
Lately I’ve been starting to make the basic song structure without any beats or just adding some a kick from an old track and then removing it to lay down the drums after I have the main lead sounds of the track. I also play around with the tempo to get a different feel for the track. I try to work fast and take breaks often. Also switch between a couple of tracks at the same time so my ears doesn’t get tired of the song.

What’s the best gig you have ever done and why?
It’s very hard to choose one. But top 5 would def be the Toy Toy night in Johannesburg recently. Really good VOID sound system and amazing dedicated crowd.

And the worst?
I try not to remember the bad ones. Probably somewhere the crowd and booker had different ideas on what was going to happen. I’ve been kind of spoiled over the years, so luckily not a lot of bad experiences.

If you weren’t a musician what would you be?
I was working with computers for a while after college. So I’m guessing something in that line of work.

Do you have any particular gigs or festivals that you dream about playing?
Many! Would be fun to play the Burning Man festival and Berghain someday!

If you could perform alongside any other band or artist, who would it be?
I have the most fun when I play with people I know. Like going b2b with my old friend Jonas Rathsman or one of the other resident dj’s I’ve been doing club nights with in Sweden have always been a blast.

Do you have any information regarding upcoming releases, projects or gigs in the pipeline that you would like to tell us about?

I’m working on a secret new alias & label – maybe someone will figure out what it is when it gets released this fall. Also some new releases in the pipeline on Trunkfunk. I’ve just released a track called ‘The Bridge’ on Get Physical Music. There is a lot more music coming out soon!

EXCLUSIVE: Talking to Jason Fernandes

0
Having released music on Carl Cox‘s Intec, Adam Beyer‘s Drumcode and his own labels Subfigure and Skyline Type Grooves amongst an array of other quality techno record labels, he is regularly releasing music and touring internationally.

We set down with London born techno, electronic music producer, DJ and artist Jason Fernandes to talk about his sound, gear and more. Find out below..

Hey Jason, how are you and what are you up to today?
I am great – busy as always. Today I am going through promos and finalising a remix in the studio.

To those not familiar with you, how would you describe your sound?
Deep, twisted, driving, often-groove-licked, techno.

What are the 5 albums that have influenced you the most?
Prodigy – The Fat Of The Land
Faithless – No Roots
Chemical Brothers – Exit Planet Dust
Aphex Twin – Selected Ambient Works 85-92
Booka Shade – Movements

But there are many DJ sets, live performances, compilation mixes and so on that have also been hugely influential.

Which other artists are you into at the moment and why?
Honestly, this is hard to pinpoint. There are so many good artists at the moment. I’m mainly playing stuff from newer artists, who are trying to break through and are clearly putting in the hours in the studio. You can hear the difference! There are a handful of established techno artists like The Advent who probably put in more hours in the studio regularly than anyone I know, and make tracks unlike anything else I hear. Loco & Jam have a fresh, groove-heavy sound. Truncate is ultra-reliable for a stripped down, rawer techno sound. I’ve just signed an EP to my label from Highestpoint, who make really solid techno tracks. Alan Fitzpatrick, Dense & Pika, Victor Calderone, Roberto Capuano, The YellowHeads…the list goes on. Beyond techno, the list is even longer. Beyond music…well you get the idea.

Are there any key pieces of equipment that you are using to define your sound?
My Moog Voyager is pretty much owed a salary right now.

What would you say some of the challenges artists face today in the music industry?
Getting heard. There are so many people making music right now it’s mystifying. It’s a wonderful thing, but definitely creates a challenge for one to be heard. But that sort of competition is a good thing. Ideas flow, you often hear or see something cool, which in turns inspires other ideas. One problem, in a time when we have so much good music and artists, you do seem to hear the same thing over and over again – at times anyway.

Where do you gather songwriting inspiration?
Hearing, seeing and feeling things. The more places, art, culture you are exposed to, usually the more fruitful you are in the studio. A techno track isn’t complicated. But the feel of the track will always mimic where I am emotionally in that moment. You can hear those who simply follow the formula, and those who put some soul into it, no matter how deep and dark a track is, or groovy and upbeat.

Take us through your songwriting process. Are there any particular steps you take when put music together?
I pick my moments carefully these days. By that I mean when to start to make a track. I need to be in the right frame of mind. Working at night is completely different to working during the day. I mainly work at night right now, into the early hours. The techno flows more freely at this time. Process wise, I try to always do something different, so its not exactly the same thing every time. Generally, I get the bass and rhythm flowing first. Leads must gel nicely with that. A good track could have only three or four elements, although by the end there are always more.

What’s the best gig you have ever done and why?
My last one was pretty cool, in Westerunie, Amsterdam. There was a great crowd, great DJs and a great system.

If you weren’t a musician what would you be?
An astronaut, or a mad man. Yeah, probably a mad man, locked away somewhere.

Do you have any information regarding upcoming releases, projects or gigs in the pipeline that you would like to tell us about?
There is always new music coming out on my label Subfigure, or Skyline Type Grooves, as well as on various quality techno labels.

Californian duo NKOSI return with new single “Constant Euphoria”

0

L.A. electronic duo NKOSI will be releasing a new single “Constant Euphoria” on the 15th July on Super Earth Records but you can already listen and watch the visuals for the track here.

Musically nodding towards Tourist and Chet Faker with vocals reminiscent of early Sting, NKOSI boast an alternative, chill house sound, laced with melodies that wouldn’t sound out of place on a Friendly Fires record. The duo is made up of vocalist Echoboyy, and Dave Sherman; formerly the guitarist for Audible Mainframe, a hip hop collective who have since gone to gain just under 1 million views on Majestic Casual. Following their debut single “White Gold” with remixes by DABP, Roisto and HEKE, NKOSI is now ready for the next round.

Dave Sherman and Echoboyy are both east-coast natives who moved to LA to pursue a career in music, separately. Having previously featured on tracks together and occasionally shared stages, the two musicians decided to join forces. They began collaborating on songs as a creative outlet and what started as somewhat of a catharsis has now developed into an intriguing and inspiring project.

NKOSI draws influences from the likes of Depeche Mode, The Orb, The Police, Siouxsie and The Banshees, highlighting their affinity for the 80’s whilst keeping the current electronic music scene firmly insight. The challenge, being to create something sparse yet textured, electronic yet emotive, producer Dave Sherman’s synth and guitar orchestrations perfectly compliment the plaintive vocals provided by Echoboyy. NKOSI is just getting started on their sonic journey and this song is just a taste of what is yet to come.

Berghain Nightclub under threat of Shopping Mall!

0
It has been reported that Berlin’s infamous nightclub could be threatened by a new “family entertainment” shopping mall bring built in the neighbourhood, Electronic Beats reports.
The disused land adjoining the Mercedes Benz Arena is planned for transformation from developers, developing it into a “Music Hall”, cinema, restaurants and the rest.
Turning the nearby area into a family-friendly zone could pose a threat to Berghain because of noise, drugs and alcohol although the development is due to finish in 2018 only which gives the world famous club at least 2 years before needing to shift elsewhere if need be!
